In 1996 David representing Scotland in the British Under 21 Semi finals aged only 15! From there he caught the eyes of Berwick promoter Mike Hope who signed the young hopeful for their conference league return. The following year he went one step further in the British Under 21 Championship reaching the final.

After a successful year in the conference league he stepped up to the main Berwick Premier League team in 1998 moving to Newcastle mid-season. A winter move to Edinburgh was marred by injury when his 1999 season was cut short at Swindon with knee ligament damage. After successful knee reconstruction surgery David missed the start of the 2000 season but was soon snapped up by Stoke.

After only four meetings he was dealt a shattering blow at the Isle of Wight when he fractured a vertebrae in his back. David's career restarted back at Berwick in 2001 under the promotion of Peter Waite but was dropped in a team strengthening exercise despite a good start to the season. After several guest appearances he was on his way to Workington where he completed the season.

The 2002 season brought a fresh start when Glasgow signed David on a full transfer from parent club Edinburgh. An injury free season saw him increase his average and earn a place in the Glasgow 2003 team. After a good 2003 season with an average of 4.89 David was unable to secure a Premier Team place in 2004. After short discussions with several Conference league teams he committed to the Boston outfit. Just prior to the start of the season he was honoured to accept the role of Captain of the 2004 Boston Barracuda Braves.

During the 2004 Season David rode with the Boston outfit until a call from parent club Glasgow, where he then transferred to until the end of the season. Because of the rule of averages he could not double down with the Barracuda Braves, David came into the Glasgow squad and completed the season with 11 official matches. During the last match of the season, he was asked to Captain the Scotland Conference Squad versus the Under 21 GB side at Armadale in September. Although the first attempt was called off, the second attempt was also to no avail ending in both David & Ben Wilson (Sheffield) on the injured list ending the 2004 season.

In 2005 David was unable to secure a Premier League place and turned to the Conference League for a team berth. Due to the introduction of the grading system which graded riders from 2 - 11 points depending on experience and age David was graded 11 and as teams were only allowed one graded 11 rider there were not many option opens for David. A call out of the blue came from Steve Ribbons offering David a place at Sittingbourne. David had the best start to a season he had ever had and was on a 10.78 average. He scored an 18pt maximum at Armadale for Sittingbourne and was offered a place at Edinburgh to replace the injured Robert Ksiezak.

David's best achievement of his career so far came in 2005 when he qualified for the Championship of Great Britian (British Final) where he scored 4 points . In 2006 David returned to his parent club Glasgow and rode at number two for the whole season upping his average, he finishing with an average of 4.05. Glasgow finished 3rd in the Premier League.

2007 saw David back with the Tigers and it proved to be his best ever with his average rising by almost two full points to 5.94. However, on the 14th October in the home meeting against Birmingham, David was involved in a horrific crash which has left him with the injuries that has forced his retirement from speedway. The Farewell Meeting has been granted to him by the BSPA and staged for him by the Glasgow Speeday promotion.
